I was born and live in Armenia, the mostly mountainous country with rich nature, bright sun and longstanding history. Maybe the lively palette of my homeland inspired me to paint on silk – since it is one of the splendid genres of visual arts. My works on silk heartened with nature even if they are not still image.

I am an architect by education, graduated the Yerevan University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in 1998. But now all my interests are in painting, both in silk painting and oil.

Although my works already went to private collections in different countries, such as France, Netherlands, Denmark, Great Britain, Switzerland, Japan, Thailand, Russia and elsewhere, my main goal is to open a window to the world at large to my works, my vision of beauty and to my country.

In 1998 graduated from the Yerevan State University of Architecture and Construction as an architect. Since 2002 until now I work as an artist and silk painting designer.

In 2007 I participated and presented Armenia in the International Silk Painters Festival in Essex, United Kingdom. Also in 2007 I took part in a number of group exhibitions of International Association of Tree and Two Dimensional Artists in London, UK, in Faro and Albufeira, Portugal.

In October 3-30, 2007 I participated in SPIN Juried Fine Art Exhibition “Transformation” From Fabric to Fabulous in the RATNER MUSEUM, Bethesda, MD, USA.

In 2008, June I took part in the Jubilee Exhibition dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of the Artist\'s Union of Armenia.

Approaching art history with a flair for abstract expressivity and a designer's confidence in choreographing fundamentals of color and shape, Schwartz wields a palette knife along with brushes to animate prismatic color stories in thickly applied oil paint. Her Crystal Auras series are opalescent mixed media paintings created with countless layers of acrylic saturated with mica, interference pigment, and natural minerals that glisten like geodes, and bounce light across their auric topographies. Her largest project, Ricordi d'Italia, merges her explorations of the mellifluous properties of color, light, and surface with direct inspiration drawn from travels to Italy. While these paintings still possess the ethereal presence of Crystal Auras, they demonstrate a more formally definitive, architectural sensibility, being derived from photographic source sketches highlighting geometric details culled from vistas and ruins. At the same time, operations of memory, deconstruction, and fantasy combine to render them in an abstract language, producing moody palimpsests and evocative scenic impressions. With Burst, Schwartz's newest collection, we see small, intimate sections of works from Ricordi d'Italia enlarged into wholly new paintings -- gestural compositions whose exotic rhythms are deeply influenced by her studies of Asian Sumi-e ink painting, which reveal their inner lives as she teases their essences forward from within their faceted depths.

Anne Brawer Schwartz is a dedicated abstractionist whose painterly imagination remains grounded in the world of places and things. While pursuing a degree in Graphic Design from the University of Oregon and further studies at the Gemological Institute of America, Schwartz always maintained a painting practice, which she kept up during her 25-year career as a renowned couture jewelry designer. The legacy of her expertise as a designer is apparent in her abstract paintings and their considerations of detail, drawing, design principles, color, texture, and refracted light. Having some years ago rededicated herself to her painting studio, today her canvases have been shown in numerous group shows and are represented in collections around the world. She frequently works with art consultants and interior designers, placing her works in businesses, hotels, private homes, and design firms. Being based in LA, her paintings have naturally also been featured in numerous television shows and motion pictures.

I love to paint in water media but often on different surfaces such as polypropylene or watercolor canvas. I try to define special places I have been with bold colors and design. I especially love cityscapes, landscapes and some floral and abstracts work in this regard. I want people to feel the passion of my feelings about the diversity in our world. It is now in the present day that over 50% of the population of the world now resides in cities. With globilization we all come together much more than before. I hope my vision of our world encourages us to see the best about the places we live.

My new series is much evolved from my previous works. In the past, although I had a feeling of the intangible and of freedom when I worked, my quest was to cull the vivid chaos of color and forms by repeatedly sanding and repainting many layers of paper and paint into a more peaceful, organized surface. It was an expression of the infinite complexities that I found surrounding me, and my desire to tame them.

Rather than being spurred (on) by a categorical statement, I was following an unformed artistic thought through to the end, feeling freedom and energy from spontaneity, the love of form, composition and color and the nostalgia that these energies stimulated. Color, form and composition, and the harmony their combination can elicit, vibrate as a grouping of musical notes might do and touch the nostalgic thinking that first brought such experience into my sights – my musical and artistic family. They were the major creative influence in my life and provided the personal trials of the complex and puzzling world I grew up in.

In my latest series I have taken this need to embrace and contain my memories

a step further. I have develop/nurtured/ my reactions to color and form to

another level. I try to capture what I feel is the essence of my creative experience.

I render my love of form, color and composition down to it’s minimum and

present them in a purer, simpler context – the grid. No less emotionally complex

but perhaps calmer, subtler if a little more intricate and peppered with

a touch of subterfuge…

Helen Berger was born in London, England to Russian émigré parents. It was a family of musicians/painters/singers and she grew up surrounded by these artists, making her sensibilities pretty much pre determined. She has been an artist all her life. After years of family influence and guidance, independent study in Paris, London and Los Angeles, assisting established artists and attending numerous workshops, she considers herself self-taught.

After using many different mediums over the years - wood, paper, clay, found objects, fabric and the camera. – Helen then settled into working with wood, paper and acrylic.

Her previous process was to layer paint, painted and cut paper onto a wood panel, continuing in multiple sanded layers and finishing with a distinct application of paint to emphasize the negative spaces. This work started out as a chaos of color, she challenged herself to recreate a mood of coherence, clarity and harmony on the panel.

Her latest series, although still on wood panel and using vellum, gesso and acrylic, blends the simplicity of repetitive shape with simple color and textural contrasts to create a play between tension and harmony.

Peter Bill is a painter and media artist. Since growing up in New Haven, CT he has been exploring the built space with paint, film and multimedia collaborations. His work focuses on space, and our interactions therein

peterbill\'s paint and video landscapes have shown in such diverse venues as The Kitchen(NYC), the Henry Art Gallery(Seattle), FILE Festival(São Paulo, Brazil), and other international venues. He received his undergraduate degree from Reed College, and his graduate degree from the University of Washington.

Art is one of the most important elements of my life. Through art, I release emotions and express myself without verbal explanation.

My work explores the impingement of mass media by means of isolation in communication, stereotyping, and the loss of personal singularity, which inadvertently dominates the way we live.

Due to the influences of mass media, people often question their own judgment and live in boxes that isolate them from everyone else. As labels are placed on others, we take a step back in defining our own individuality and our ability to make accurate judgments on our own. I hope to increase social awareness of how people divide others into categories and live their lives in a mold that someone else has created. With labels comes separation, most commonly seen when public venues, such as Starbucks, slowly become places of solitude and privacy, where friendly greetings become unwanted annoyances. Because of this, there is an invisible barrier that we create for ourselves that causes us to question who we are and what we think of others. Not only do we isolate ourselves from one another, we have become co-dependent and bound to various sources of technology. As people live their lives they are contingent upon the use of machines to assist in activities, communication, and overall day-to-day function. Our future generations are born into a world in which simple things such as knowing how to calculate, talking to someone in person, or hand-writing a letter has become obsolete. We have lost our face-to-face connection. Because of this, technology has also created an invisible barrier between humans and nature. In the decision to focus my work towards issues that may be neglected or ignored, I hope to counter the effects of mass media with social awareness.

Kaleeka Bond was born in Virginia and grew up in Southern California. She received her BFA in 2006 and her MFA in 2008 from Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) in Laguna Beach, CA and has been exhibiting her work regularly for 18+ years. After obtaining her MFA, Kaleeka went on to teach drawing and painting at numerous colleges throughout Southern California. She currently teaches five classes and owns multiple businesses, while continuing to exhibit her work. Alongside her husband, Harith, Kaleeka owns and operates an apparel line, Adinkra Stitch.

Influenced by behaviors in society and the impingement of mass media, she hopes to counter the effects of these disconnections with social awareness through her artwork. When interviewed about her work, Kaleeka stated; “Art has a way of opening our eyes to things that we refuse to see. I want my work to compel people to see beyond the superficial and seek the profound, ultimately allowing them to live beyond what they think of as the obvious and understand that individualism and the ability to communicate shape the uniqueness of the world.”

As a child growing up in Russia, even before I knew they were called mosaics, I created collages from pieces of broken glass found in the street, rocks, paper, seashells, and bits of crockery. Through the years I tried various media for artistic expression but have now returned to my origin — mosaics. This medium gives me a chance to explore color, shape, and texture, to experiment with different materials, and satisfy the passion to integrate unrelated small bits into a single work of art.

I am a self-taught mosaicist. While I am inspired by the rich history of the medium, I strive to build a unique and personal art form on the base of classical mosaic. In addition to traditional mosaic tesserae, I incorporate unusual materials in my work — mirror, pebbles, found objects, beads, buttons, wire, handmade ceramic pieces, and broken plates. I never return home empty handed from a walk on the beach or a trip. Beach glass, pebbles from a path on Hampstead Heath, broken glass from a studio in Seattle, a bit of bone found on the shore are special little bits that are inserted into each mosaic to give it a special, personal meaning.

Ione's art has shown nationally since 1998 when, after years of world travel, a successful television, radio, theatre and film career in the performing arts, she decided to focus her richly diverse talents on the visual arts.

Ione's artistic expression, creativity, and passion for communication have resulted in numerous awards for her painting, sculpture, mixed media, and assemblage. Her work has also been featured in several important publications. Ione maintains an extensive exhibition schedule in juried, non-juried, and invitational arts venues.

Ione is an avant garde artist whose artistic expression takes fantastic shape through her diverse oil and watercolor paintings, bronze sculptures, found object collages and mixed media assemblages. Her contemporary paintings and sculptures range from abstract to realistic to impressionistic - all visionary interpretations from her imaginative soul.

Ione uses only one name but a variety of styles to soothe her wild imagination. A native of Chicago, she is a former television star and commercial voice-over artist. Now she wins awards and sells her creativity through her hands instead of through her larynx. Her art is as original as she is - bold, colorful and highly decorative.

No question but the painting of Jenik Cook - and hardly less the work she realizes in other media (most notably ceramics) -is abstract-expressionist. But it is not necessarily Abstract Expressionist. That is, however much it may evince the DNA of mid-century American "action painting," or even European counterparts such as tachism, l'art informel, or CoBrA, Cook's art only incidentally revives the method, much less the look, of these bumptious, scrappy art movements. Rather, to power her vision, she goes back to the roots of gestural modernism, finding dancing line, elastic contour, and fervid color in surrealism, in fauvism, in expressionism itself. The painting of Pollock and Kline, and of Fautrier and Jorn, gives Cook permission to work unfettered like this, and gives us the context to comprehend fully - even to empathize kinesthetically with - what she does. But she is not emulating, much less imitating, Afro or James Brooks in her graceful, muscular paintings on paper or rehashing Sam Francis or André Lanskoy with the rhythmic clots and scatterings of pigment that collect on her canvases (well, on a wide variety of more-or-less canvas-like support material). Look instead to Miro, Masson, Marc, or Münter, Pechstein or Picasso, Marcks or Matisse, for Cook's sources.

Indeed, look into Cook's own cultural heritage. The line that whips and loops throughout Cook's oeuvre, whether hurling forms across canvas expanses or tracing them on the sides of pots, whether describing slashing trails of pure pigment or the sinuous contours of human bodies, is no more a painted line than it is a written one. It is made less with the whole body - although one can sense a change of stance, a hip motion, in so many of these dancing whiplashes - than with the whole arm. These gestures issue from the wrist and the shoulder. They are in fact as much inscribed as painted. Their energy is not just telegraphic; it is calligraphic. If the vivacity of the image bespeaks Cook's Armenian blood, the rhapsodic curvaceousness of her line betrays her Iranian childhood. As comfortable speaking and writing Farsi as she is Armenian, Cook marries her disparate cultural sources -which of course now include the western European and American influences of her adult life - into an aesthetically cohesive mix with a surprisingly broad formal reach.

Perhaps the breadth of that reach, given the variety of sources, isn't actually so surprising. But it is always a bit startling to witness - that is, to be allowed to witness - an artist master such a conceptual and expressive range. Most artists have this range in them, but so many suppress it. For her part, however, Cook refuses to suppress her stylistic multivalency. Not only does she not limit her vision, but she uses that vision very consciously to drive her artmaking in as many ways as it needs to go. She may edit, but she does not self-censure. Her style, ultimately as coherent and personal as a signature, emerges from and among her plethora of approaches, approaches which themselves spring from her persistence, her prolific output, her knowledge of art, and her irrepressible verve. I do drawings when I make art. I am interested in marks that are expressive of emotional, political, and historical meaning. I ike to play on form, composition, and light. The drawings I would submit to this competitiion are enormous- three to four feet wide and in some cases over eight feet tall. They are so large that the marks in their making can no no longer be precious. They become gestural, quick, and rough. I am trying to capture the ellusive nature of the inelluctable light that falls on any reality whether that light is the true light as filtered through the atmosphere, the eye, the attitude, or the history book.

Artist, Architect and writer. I have been a member of the Los Angeles art community for 30 years. Exhibited in downtown Los Angeles at AAA art Gallery, Exile, and the Downtown lives shows for several years. For 6 years- 1980 -1986, ran the Art Dock, the drive-by art gallery in downtown Los Angeles, about which I am currently writing a book. I have worked in colaboration with other artists including Pamela Burgess on the Los Angeles Mission and James Doolin on the North Hollywood Subway Station. My current book \\\"bipolar bare\\\" is a memoir of my life\\\'s journey with mental disorder and is filled with 32 illustration by me, including self-portraits, one of my enormous drawings, and other sketches. I have written for several art journals including Coagula. I consider myself to be a renaissance man in the 21st Century.

I paint figurative work in a representative and somewhat expressive style. I was educated at Rhodes University in South Africa where I received a BFA (distinction in painting). My education there was a traditional one, with the emphasis on drawing and working from life. However, the pushing forward of painterly boundaries was also very much encouraged.

After leaving Rhodes University, I went on to complete an MFA (cum laude) at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. My thesis was entitled “Tactility, Illusionism and the Depiction of Flesh in Selected Contemporary Painting”. Focusing on the work of Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud, I discussed how painting that gives an illusion of external reality can often induce

I was born and raised in New Orleans, and from an early age was entranced by the way the city and it\'s people transformed en masse at one time of year. Mardi Gras is a magic time. I remember going to the parades at night and feeling taken out of myself by the color, the fire and light, the music and costumed madness. It was an experience of the very thin veil between the familiar and the unknown- sometimes dangerous, sometimes ecstatic. Now in my work I am interested in moments where being slips into the revelation of something unexpected. The smallest moments take on mythic significance when seen in these terms. My paintings begin from the point of view that identity and the relationship between inner and outer worlds are unstable. This instability is connected to perception.

For me, the interplay between the painted and the photographed, between the seen and the sensory experience is mysterious and fascinating. I am drawn to photograph, and then subsequently paint moments where an underlying pulse of possibility hovers at the edges of what we immediately recognize. At these liminal moments it is possible for us to become lost, transformed, or transported by the act of seeing. Painting is a way of finding my way through and communicating the indefiniteness of experience.

Nicole Duet lives and works in Reseda, and lately feels one foot working its way back to the New Orleans she grew up in.

Visual artist and poet Ruth Dutoit was born in 1925, the eighth of ten children in the coal mining region of southwestern Virginia. She received her B.A. at the University of Miami, Florida (1948) and her Master of Arts Degree from New York University’s School of Education (1955). While pursing her passion for academics, she also took a profound interest in the diversity of people and love of the earth, leading her to worldwide travels and studies. She completed her arts education by attending master classes at the Art Students League of New York City. From 1955 to 1956 she studied privately with Amedée Ozenfant in Cannes, and attended classes at the École des Beaux Arts of Aix-en-Provence, France.

Ruth then spent several decades in Switzerland, after getting married there 1959. Ruth exhibited in numerous European countries and developed a long standing relationship with the prestigious Jeanne Wiebenga Gallery near Lausanne, Switzerland. She also wrote and published poetry in English and French, illustrated with her ink portraits in black and white. In the early 1990s, Ruth moved back to the United States where she continued to experiment with various art forms in Washington DC. She continued to travel internationally, tapping into various cultures that influenced her vision and paintings. Ruth lived in Round Hill, Virginia in early 2000, where she pushed the envelope of her creations, before moving to Southern California in 2005 where she currently resides and works.

Now 84, Ruth continues to bring her vision to the forefront of the art world, bridging the gap between traditional art and multimedia. From the beginning, Ruth’s interest have had one underlying theme: Changing Perceptions for Changing Times. Ruth says “the more you learn, the more you keep your mind and spirit open, the more your life will be free flowing and in sync. Each moment is just another milestone in the unfolding of one‘s destiny. Perception, whether it be visual or otherwise, can only take place when there is no division between the observer and the observed. In retrospect -- everyday, every moment is a new beginning. Just my cup of tea!\"

I am a primarily a sculptor working in varied media. A painter, a curator, an educator, and builder of large architectural/environmental landscape works formed out of rock, metal, often megalithic in size. My work continues to evolve through the exploration of new media. The use of clay to captivate me, serving as an extension of my imago mundi.

My photographic collages are layers of my reflections and observations, being personal, political or historical.

Like our life experiences, these thoughts accumulate on top of each other, to create my feelings and emotions that get expressed in the artwork.

The layering process coincides with the synthesis of creating visual pieces that invites one to investigate and explore the given information.

Like in previous works of mine, made on glass, the technique and the transparencies in my photographic digital collages are an important part of the art, they emphasis the build-up process and the blending which creates the images.

Vered Galor has been involved with the fine art world as an artist, curator and educator for over thirty years. She received her BA and MA in Fine Art from California State University in Northridge in 1975 and 1978.

Mrs. Galor started her career as glass sculptor. In 1981 she established a business doing curatorial projects and consulting in Contemporary Fine Art.

She lectured, participated in discussions and wrote art programs to encourage the collaboration of Art and Architecture.

Since 1989 Mrs. Galor has been concentrating on photography. She has been creating here own work, teaching photography and showing with galleries in Los Angeles California, Fort Collins and Loveland, Colorado and Las Vegas Nevada.

I have always enjoyed the creative process. In addition to being a means of expression and a source of great enjoyment, art is a means of healing ourselves and facilitating the healing in others. I have worked in a variety of media, including printmaking, pen and ink, colored pencils and markers, watercolors, acrylics and oils. My favorite themes include Judaica, landscapes, leaves and doves. I also enjoy exploring the abstract.

Debora Gillman has studied art at UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, Otis and Los Angeles City College.

Exhibits include a group show in the Adult Education Division of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; individual and group shows at Park La Brea, including their annual “Art in the Park” events,where she has contributed a variety of award winning banner art and Tower Art designs. Other venues include The American Museum of Science & Energy in Oak Ridge, Tennessee; the Don O'Melveny Gallery, Los Angeles and The JAN Gallery, Los Angeles. Her work is also part of the permanent collection at Cedars Sinai, Los Angeles.

Debora has taught workshops for children and adults at Park La Brea and the Craft and Folk Art Museum. She has also coordinated and help put on numerous local community events. “Debi Doodles” is her popular coloring book creation for kids for the holidays as well as other themes. Debora has written and illustrated three books for young readers: THE PAINTER'S DREAM; DRAWING FROM THE MASTERS; and AN UN-BEAR-ABE SITUATION: BEARS AND THE ENVIRONMENT. She co-wrote and co-illustrated the third book with her mother, Miriam Gillman, who is also an artist/writer. Debora thanks her mother for "sharing her creative gene with her." Tm Gratkowski’s art is both concept-driven and process-driven.

Beneath a tangle of fragmented vignettes, patterns, colors and textures, one encounters thought-provoking words, images and stories – the experience is visceral as well as intellectual. Tm uses images as a lexicon of information to redefine popular media into a social criticism about the very things that we are surrounded by but pay little attention to everyday. He layers and juxtaposes this print-media to question the popular influences we encounter everyday in our media-saturated world.

Tm composes layers of paper, much the way a painter builds up their canvas with layers of paint, to develop his imagery and subject matter. Using source material primarily from the

I was first introduced to art while I was still in the womb. My Mother developed a ”sudden craving” to paint in her last month of pregnancy. Maybe it was the aroma that sparked my interest. When I was five, my Grandpa encouraged me by having me paint enough pieces to fill a wall for my ”first exhibit.” My entire family then gathered together to preview my collection and hear my stories about each painting. It was a rewarding and fulfilling experience and solidified my interest in the arts.

For me, art has always been a way to express my emotions. My style of painting does not represent my formal art education, but is inspired by the children I teach. With their youthful enthusiasm and creative minds, objects are seen and painted in a whole different light. And, when you learn to ”open your imagination” to colors, lights, textures and shapes, you will be able to put your thoughts on canvas in a brilliant way.

"My art allows me to see the beauty – the color and design – in ordinary everyday objects, in buildings, in clothing, in nature.

We are all surrounded by beauty. All we need to do is stop, look and take it all in."

Georganne Aldrich Heller, daughter of the famous fashion designer and art collector Larry Aldrich and a successful designer is an artist in her own right. She makes collages building on the vision that drove her long career as a theatrical producer in New York. Each collage and boxed construction represents a setting of evolving mysteries, opening the way to surreal dramas inviting viewers to enter the world of her dreams, yet unruled by any sort of literary content. Instead, Heller favors a lucid, iconic approach where the “thingness” of shapes and substances is allowed its own expression, her visual reasoning riding on the dynamic that powered western art through a half century of experiment, from cubism to De Stijl.

My works generally are the result of a continuous refinement of established techniques and experimentation painted on canvas or paper with mixed media materials. Mostly subjects are based on abstracted impressions and memories of different architectural sites I have visited throughout the world. Ancient, and far away places and their unique moods created by light and changing color evoke intense responses and compel me to create my work. In order to capture every mood to my personal satisfaction,

the surfaces have to be superimposed and juxtaposed, creating major and minor accents with some kind of harmony.

I feel that the completion of my paintings is a journey unto itself, of color and feelings. At times I insert snapshots and add

J. Natasha Kostan lives and works in Los Angeles and has been painting in multimedia for the past 30 years. She has studied Fashion and Interior Design in England and Fine Arts and Art History in the United States, and received her BFA from Immaculate Heart College. Her work includes oils, acrylics, mixed media and collage on canvas and on paper.

She studied printmaking extensively under Maurizio Barattucci, a well-known and highly respected artist and instructor. The printmaking process has been an inspiration for developing intriguing primary surfaces and the metamorphosis of Natasha's works on paper. Natasha states: "Ancient, and far away places and their unique moods created by light and changing color evoke intense responses and compel me to create my work. In order to capture every mood to my personal satisfaction, the surfaces have to be superimposed and juxtaposed, creating major and minor accents with some kind of harmony."

Her eclectic style is a manifestation of her multi-hued vision of the world. Her work expresses her experience of living in and traveling through several cultures. "Her palette reflects warmth, balance and strength," said the late Barbara Hagar, California artist, teacher and mentor with whom Natasha studied for many years. Numerous corporations as well as private collectors throughout the United States and England own her paintings. She has exhibited solo and in groups in the United States and Armenia.

I am greatly influenced by concepts of domesticity, the traditions those concepts suggest, and the roles assumed by women who inhabit domestic spaces. Also, I have resigned myself to the fact that I am quite suggestible to the “shoulds\" of those domestic roles. Departing from the photographs I usually make, the objects from the \"lift\" series reflect my affection for the subjectivity of personal ritual. Craft store felt and sealing wax complement relic-like remnants of hair that have been removed from my body. Rather than discard the wax-encrusted hairs, I hand stitch them onto felt with a seal bearing the initial of the cosmetologist who performed the ritual.

Born in Los Angeles, Lesley Krane earned an A.A. degree in Photography at Santa Monica College, got a B.A. in Art at UCLA, then earned an M.F.A. in Studio Art at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque in 1995. She began teaching Photography in the Art Department at CSUN in 1999 and has been a member of the full-time faculty there since 2002. Committed to the practice of still photography, Lesley teaches her students to have a reverence and sensitivity for the medium. She is a published artist and has exhibited her work at local and national venues.

I spent my professional career as a scientist and science educator. After moving to California, I studied painting and developed an interest in digital photography. Today, I exhibit and sell both photographs and paintings.

As an artist and a scientist I know that art and science are not really an unlikely combination. Both strive to see nature with a fresh eye. In my work, I explore the inner richness of nature and the human form in a visual medium, looking for the structure underneath the surface, using the original colors our eyes combine together. My style is impressionism; my ideas expressed in pigments and through the camera lens. My aim: to find beauty in unexpected and unlikely places.

I studied with painters, Ken Goldman and Annette Paquet, photographers Stephen Burns and Jim Cline. I belong to San Diego Watercolor Society, La Jolla Art Association, Digital Art Guild, and UCSD Visual Arts Group. I am a judge for the San Diego Watercolor Society.

Swanica finds a connection with Mother Nature and meaning of life through the creation of ceramic art. When she moved to Japan in 2006 she won awards in Mashiko and Mino for her raku horsehair technique work. With this technique one removes red hot pieces from the kiln and applies horsehair and other materials and fumes them. This results in exquisite earthenware colors and express the elegance and harmony of nature through her abstract designs, the interplay between line and form, and surface treatment.

Living in Kamakura, Japan, with its rich culture and history and its long heritage of wood carving allowed her to create a unique style. Her “Kamakura-Red Ware” is inspired by the texture and red pigmented color of the Kamakura Bori Wood Carving Art. Her multi-layered red glaze symbolizes love, passion and strength. My last work is inspired by the Flower of Life symbol. This symbol is known for its perfect form, proportion, and harmony and of sacred geometry, depicting the fundamental forms of space and time. It is the form beneath our being and point towards a divine order in our reality. It is a visual expression of the connections life weaves through all mankind.

My art is in a range of mediums from abstract painting to photography to digital media. I find it an advantage to work in multiple mediums because it allows me the opportunity to explore each and go beyond their individual boundaries to experiment and invent new ways of creating art and subject matter. It has always been my main focus as an artist to allow the viewer to define each piece of art for themselves as there is no definite exact meaning but rather a feeling of intensity and intrigue that each viewer must discover in the art. Using color, design and experimental technique I try to draw the audience into my subject matter to evoke both mystery and meaning. Each piece is a new discovery for the audience and for me as it is my ongoing desire to continue to evolve and reinvent myself as an artist.

Lucie Boswell was born in 1968 in San Francisco, California, and from an early age knew she wanted to express herself through art. Graduating in 1992 with a BA in Art Studio from UC Santa Barbara, she went on to study photography at the Santa Fe Photo Workshop, working with some of the world’s finest photographers including National Geographic, Magnum photographers and more. In 1996 she moved to Los Angeles where she became a member of the ASMP – the American Society of Media Photographers. Over the last two decades Lucie has built an impressive resume in various mediums, from photography to painting to mixed media. Her work has been shown in galleries and juried shows both nationally and internationally, and been published in numerous books and publications. Boswell is also an avid patron of the arts, supporting art museums, art programs and individual artists around the world.

Now in my creation I want to show interdependence interosculation interchange Life Energy and dryness of modern technology.

I was born in Ryazan,Russiya. When I touched clay for the first time, I knew that sculpture was the best way for me to tell my story. When I sculpt, I experience feelings

and images that dwell in my subconscious mind. These are revealed to me as I form the clay and fashion the ideas into actual objects. Sculpting is my relationship with life on all levels and its very sacred

to me. It allows me to look inside myself and then out to the world around me. I get great pleasure from following and trusting my intuition and process.

My formative years in Russia provided the context for much of my artistic expression. Drawing upon early cultural and educational experiences, vision and feelings connect and emerge from the clay.

I was born in Kiev Ukraine, where I spent the first thirty years of my life. Thus, Russian culture, in the forms of music, poetry, visual art, and meditation, were an important part of my life there. I was trained as a speech pathologist and worked in that field for eight years.

I moved to the United State to escape religious persecution in the Soviet Union. I arrived without family or friends, knowledge of English, or monetary support. I was a single mother with a 4-year

old son. It took me twenty years to build a new life and to bring my family to this country. As a consequence, I am largely a self-taught artist.

I was not able to articulate my artistic feelings for a very long time.

But, when I felt clay for the first time, I knew I found my medium.

Texture is reality's lens. I like to make the invisible visible because life -such as what is taken for granted, what surrounds us and creates the fabric of our existence- can feel very, very small. Life is an eternal combat between light and darkness. A corridor of peace and violence, movement and stillness , a quiet desperation that reaches into one's soul and grabs hold of our heart in one swift swoop. Look deep into the core of these images and find yourself in it. Find your own road and go beyond its frontiers...

Dr. Caroline Mercier has taught, designed and exhibited her work for more than 15 years. She spent 5 years in the British Isles, studying and creating new work. Her PhD Fine Arts, specialized in Creative Design is the first one of its kind in the Western World. She now divides her time between teaching full time, designing professionally as well as creating and exhibiting her fine art work.

As an educator, she was granted early tenure at CSU Stanislaus for her high commitment to students and the community. She is presently the Vice-Chair of Design and Technology for the KC ACTF, an organization sponsored by the Kennedy Center, and has been asked to sit on judging panels in Art institutions such as Delta College and Cal Arts. She has been invited as a guest artist in residence in Art Centers in England, Ireland, France and Thailand where she had a silk and painting exhibit in Bangkok. Last year, she was asked to publish work on her last solo textile exhibit in Paris at the Talmart Gallery. This year she studied masks, puppets and weaving in Bali with Alit Bagus, and she’s just back from a master class in Florence Italy, sketching and painting the Renaissance.

I’m an abstract symbolist who works with color, texture, shape and storytelling imagery to convey my wonder and appreciation for this earthly experience we call life. I want to excite the sensibilities, to engulf, saturate. I have many messages but, mostly, my work invites others to address and confront the power of simple beauty, the incunabula, the unknown, rites of passages, epiphanies, rebirth. Transformation is a constant in life and essential to our evolution. Each step we take is sacred and decides the journey. Every breath requires a new commitment to courage. My paintings examine the personas, the bodies, the heavens, dark and mysterious corners, the stopping places and launching pads of the soul. I’m deeply affected by the style of the original artists, the cave painters. Scientists opine they were women. These days my studio features drawings by DaVinci, photos from the Webb telescope and undersea animals. I live in the crossfire of science, art and personal healing.

I am often thoughtful of unity and through-line, I seek to convey a freedom and visceral truth that is unencumbered by any one message or agenda. This allows me to construct each work with a joyful, exploratory energy.

Montealegre’s art education emerged under the tutelage of abstract painter, Robert Kingston.

She is a recipient of the Puffin Foundation Grant for her performance art piece: Portrait of the First Woman.

Montealegre has continued to win prizes for her paintings and her works are featured in several publications.

Montealegre’s recent BELLINGHAM'S WHATCOM MUSEUM presentation of her painting, Heal Thyself! was featured in the Lightcatcher building where Eva performed a joyful song to introduce the curator's presentation.

2015 Eva is included in the prestigious Latina Art Initiative founded by Linda Vallega. She is vetted as one of the best Latin Artists in the country.

2015 Eva Montealegre is named a BEST ARTIST when ARTAVITA chooses the BEST ARTISTS in an international contest.

HIGGS BOSON, PORTRAIT OF THE FIRST WOMAN, the original painting by Eva Montealegre, a 64" x 96" oil on canvas, is featured in FIRST POST to announce the Nobel Prize Award to Peter Higgs for his creation theory explaining the origin of the Universe.

Eva’s painting, MOON ONE, is featured in the art book, ART TAKES TIMES SQUARE. Her figurative painting of a woman titled, CREATIVE CALL, is featured in the art book, WOMEN'S RIGHTS: An Artist’s Perspective sponsored by UniteWomen.Org. Her work has been honored by the City of Los Angeles in calendars and catalogs. She has participated in a number of Los Angeles community events.

2012 Eva's painting of the sun, IT'S ALRIGHT, receives first prize from WOMEN'S CAUCUS FOR ART. That same year Eva's painting DEEP VEIN #3 is presented at MOLAA'S WOMAN FESTIVAL.

Growing up farming, fishing, raising cattle-in such a nurturing, cyclical environment-was the school of life for me.

I never had training in art growing up. It was difficult to get art supplies. So I satisfied my artistic desires drawing sketches & giving them to friends. I was unacquainted with art as an academic term. Over time, with patience, perseverance, doing what I loved to do, I felt encouraged & adopted a philosophy that has made me very independent in the styles in which I express myself.

In my art, it is me first & the medium after. Freedom is the foundation of the manner in which I express myself. I like to create but I want to see my personality & life experience in what I create. Ballpoint pen is my simple yet unforgiving.

Djibril NDoye is an internationally recognized artist with artwork in galleries, universities, homes & businesses in West Africa, USA, Mexico, Cuba, Western Europe, Japan & Korea.

He has received many awards in recognition of his talent as a self-taught artist: 1st Prize (Drawing), Affaire in the Gardens Art Show, Beverly Hills CA 2008; 2nd Prize, Sausalito Art Festival 2007; Best of Category, La Quinta Arts Festival 2005; Best of Show, Pan African Arts Festival Los Angeles 2004; Universal Living Treasure from the Association for Cultural & Artistic Promotion (PCA) in Bargny, Senegal, 2002.

He considers his work to be universal art. Previously working with standard materials like oil paint/watercolor, he developed his own distinct technique using only ballpoint pen during a half dozen years of research & experimentation. After taking the ballpoint pen drawings to a very high level of professionalism, he began using charcoal pencil on larger surfaces to further develop his intensely emotional detailed drawing style. Recent creations are drawn directly on wood with a woodburner.

Born in 1953 in Bargny, Senegal, self-taught, & a member of the National Association of Artists/Graphists of Senegal, his public life began when he won 1st Prize in 1981 at the Popular Educational Center in Rufisque, Senegal.

And since then he has participated in many juried festivals, exhibits & galleries in the USA, and speaks about his life & art to students from grammar school to college.

I am DRIVEN with a PASSION as if caught in a never-ending spiral of creativity, seeking challenges, problems, finding solutions and, in the end, discovering a coalescing of all my energy into a single material entity--- complete and justified in its existence.

A California native born in Los Angeles, I have always been interested in art. I began creating items from scraps of paper, pencils and found garden materials. Unlike other children who simply picked up a crayon and colored, I studied all possible color combinations with sets of two and three crayons by making charts and then creating designs on paper.

I found the structure of art classes very limiting, therefore, I self-taught by continually mixing mediums and experimenting with different materials and subject matter.

Within the last three years my work has been exhibited in thirteen states and Canada. Many have won awards at these Juried Exhibitions.

Among the words others have used to describe me are: Born artist, mysterious, regal, an inspiration, beautiful, accomplished, gutsy, classy, provocative, courageous, strong, determined, focused, charismatic, a study in extremes, incisive, perceptive and having a flair for the unusual.

Alexander Osipov grew up and matured as an artist in Almaty city in Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is a place where roads of ancient traditions of two great cultures as Asia and Europe merge together. Alexander graduated from two classical art schools one of which is Almaty Art School named after N.V. Gogol and second is Kazakh State Academy of Arts named after T.K. Zhurgenov. His philosophy of contemplation and rationality, understanding of antiquity and high technologies was formed thanks to guidance of leading Kazakhstanie teachers and as a result of many years of practice. This philosophy is reflected in unique style of his paintings. First artworks of Alexander were displayed in 1981, and then repeatedly exposed at the exhibitions in Kazak

Alexander started to exhibit his art pieces in 1979 at the Domestic and International Exhibitions, and many of them are now posessed by private collectionists and museums in Kazakhstan and abroad.

My best work translates the moment, the landscape, and elements into a memory held by the canvas and pigment. The more I allow intuition and spontaneity to override what I think I know, the better the final result. Plein air painting is about truly being there, partnering with land and sky. For me it is about knowing that the subject and the moment are the soul of the work and not subordinating it to me or to my agenda. When I am the lands translator and advocate, thats when my work advances and evolves.

Joan Parker, a California native, is a plein air landscape painter whose keen eye for design initially took her to Paris to study hair and fashion design. She built a successful career and business before turning her attention to painting and fine art. Parker received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She moved to the Kansas City area in 1996, when Hallmark Cards recruited her to create original greeting card artwork. Six years later, she left Hallmark to pursue plein air painting full-time.

Parker has been instrumental in establishing plein air painting events in both Missouri and Kansas. I often awaken from sleep at sunrise, with the light calling me outside to participate in the birth of the new day, she exclaims. I love the beauty of the reflected colors on a lake as the wind shimmers diagonally across the surface, so I capture it in paint! Parker is in the permanent collection of Libraries and Corporations and is represented in galleries from St. Louis to California.

Parker has a passion for the immediacy of painting outdoors and enjoys sharing her love with others by holding workshops through out the Midwest.

I hope to create work that reveals the organic foundations of humanness.

As a woman, I believe there are always parts of ourselves that carry the innocence and curiosity of a little girl. That energy—the wonder, the fearlessness, the vulnerability—still lives within us.

"Mirror Twins" are characters that many people can see themselves in. I choose not to reveal too much about them—I’d rather let viewers discover their own meaning and stories within the work.

Now more than ever, artists and creatives must stand up for the value of art. Even when the world isn’t ready to hear our voices—especially as some are being censored, edited, or erased—we must keep creating. It’s painfully clear that many of our communities are being silenced and pushed to the margins.

As an artist, cartoonist, creator, and teacher, I’m committed to encouraging others to stand boldly and make art that speaks truth. My own journey is always evolving. Maybe it’s okay that I don’t reveal everything. Maybe my role is more about connection—and keeping a few secrets of my own.

Cristina Natsuko Paulos is an award-winning artist, animator, cartoonist, designer, and educator. She currently teaches commercial arts and digital media at a high school in the Clark County School District, and works as a freelance artist and workshop leader. She also likes to remind people: she’s a good human.

A BFA graduate of the California Institute of the Arts, Paulos’s work blends fine art and illustration, often featuring mirrored or twinned characters, expressive portraiture, and imagery inspired by real life. Her style draws heavily from cartoon aesthetics and deeply personal themes, creating a space where vulnerability, identity, and duality intersect.

Her original animation work has appeared on Sesame Street, and her artwork has been exhibited in prestigious galleries including La Luz de Jesus, Giant Robot, and the Cirque du Soleil Contemporary Art Collection. She has also been featured in two published books: Garden of Eye Candy and La Luz de Jesus 25: The Little Gallery That Could. Her films have screened at festivals in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and she has collaborated with puppeteers to create toy theatre performances.

Since relocating from the San Fernando Valley to Las Vegas in 2002, Paulos has received multiple grants from the Nevada Arts Council, including two Jackpot Grants, a 2008 Artist Fellowship, and a 2005 Sesame Street Workshop Scholarship.

Paulos works with a wide range of materials—ink, paint, dye, handmade paper, canvas, wood, and mixed media. Her process is rooted in the philosophies of drawing, aiming to expose the raw, often hidden elements of identity.

“My artwork derives from life, juxtaposed with the cartoon world,” she says. “Using drawing philosophies, I try to reveal the marks we often try to erase—the flaws, the discomfort, the quiet parts of ourselves. Whether through cartoons or figures drawn from life, I explore what it means to be fully seen, completely vulnerable—naked, beyond form.”

По профессии юрист, но в душе глубокий романтик. Живу на юге Украины в живописном городе, окруженном реками – Николаеве.

Интерес к лоскутам возник вместе с одежками для кукол. Подбирая под столами закройщиков в ателье у мамы лоскутки, превращала их в платья для принцесс. В общем-то, как у любого начинания, цель была хозяйственная - жалко выкидывать лоскутки. Идея создания картин с восточной тематикой родилась лет в 12, интересовали детали интерьера, костюмы, философия Японии.

С самого детства я прониклась эстетикой японского любования каждым мигом жизни во всем его великолепии. Именно так – укиё-э – «образы изменчивого мира» называется японская гравюра. В центре внимания художников оказались несколько тем и направлений: прекрасные дамы, как правило куртизанки и гейши (жанр бидзин-га), актеры театра Кабуки и сцены из театральных постановок театра Но (жанр якуся-э), эротические сцены (сюнга – букв. перевод «весенние картинки»), изображение самураев и воинов, батальных сцен (жанр муся-э).

Оживляя гравюры, делая их из лоскутов объемными и живыми, я как бы даю возможность зрителю дотронуться до этой самобытной культуры, рассмотреть и ощутить каждый момент жизни Японии. Сохранены детали интерьера, соблюдена сложность причесок и цветовая гамма одежд, которые имеют глубину и объем присущий барельефу.

Своим работам я дала название, которым часто называют театр Но - «цудзурэ-нисики» - «парча из лоскутов», потому, что в работе живут не отдельные лоскуточки, а единые персонажи, которые являют собой парчовую душу Японии.

Моя основная цель - передать всё мое восхищение самобытной восточной культурой людям.

Art is a way of life and not entertainment

Using found objects to create sculptures brings resources to my disposition that are as varied as the material realm of the world we live in; they provide an interesting mirror of our time and society.

My work is frequently narrative or symbolic and deals with social and spiritual issues.

A recent series – 18” x 18” squared – aims to explore the energy of matter and its relationship to the action/manipulation of the artist.

Annemarie Rawlinson, an award-winning artist, works primarily in mixed media and collage and has shown her work nationally and internationally. In 1994, she founded the L.A. Assemblage Group. This group currently has 17 members and networks and exhibits at least once a year together.

Using discarded objects as art materials, Annemarie aims at raising public consciousness of the need to conserve resources and preserve the natural environment. These objects, once useful, bring their own beauty and vibrations with them, expressing symbolic or narrative content.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Burton Rein attended Otis College of Art & Design, from which he received a BFA degree in 1985. He was in several group shows in the Los Angeles area during this period.

However it was not until the year 2000, after he took an early retirement from his career in forensic psychology, that he was able to devote the time he needed to develop his own work. He lives and works in Los Angeles, California. His work is held in private collections in the United States.

Born and raised on the beach in Malibu, I spent my childhood treasure hunting in the tide pools and high tide lines of the sea. I have never given up my love of found objects and take quite a lot of meaning from the things that I find. Now I use discarded objects and unimportant throwaways to talk about important things: social and political and personal concerns that I hope touch and resonate with others. Bringing up thoughts and feelings that lie just beneath the surface to conscious realizations, is my objective in what I do and create.

Having studied and practiced various medium; clay, bookmaking, acrylic and watercolor painting I fell upon my creative gold mine when I attended a workshop with Alexis Smith at OTIS. I had collected found objects all my life but had been completely unaware of the medium of assemblage. It was such an exciting opportunity to meet other assemblage artists and discover a community of like-minded artists. The group 8Women was formed and we exhibited twice as a group at the Helms Building.

I have drawn upon my graduate degree in Art from Cal State University, Long Beach and it has deepened my work and widened my perspective. I have been exhibiting locally and nationally in juried shows for the past three years and recently received an award from Peter Mays of Gallery 825 in Los Angeles.

When I was diagnosed with a retinal degenerative disease in 1984, I questioned my ability to continue painting. I slowly transformed my thinking and techniques to incorporate my physical limitations as an integral part of my work.

Miy color palette has grown more vivid as my sight diminishes. I create original stencils to form iconic images as I can no longer easily draw recognizable forms free-hand.

I use text to form \"weavings of words\" which create multiple layers of information.

In my \"visual music\" paintings each layer is inspired by a feature in a particular song--e.g. the guitar line, the drums and finally the lyrics.

I am inspired now less by what I see and more by what I hear, remember and imagine.

Barbara was born in Philadelphia, PA where she earned a BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the arts. She moved to Los Angeles and earned an MFA from Otis College of Art & Design.

After working for the Los Angelse Theatre Center\'s Theater as a Leaning Tool program, in 1992 she co-founded Art Options, an iinterdisciplinary arts education program for high risk teenagers. She received Artist in Residence Awards from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and the California Arts Council.

In 2007 she was chosen as one of 5 national Teaching Artist Fellows by VSA arts in Washington, D.C.

She has created public art installations at Watts Towers Art Center Gallery, the former Women\'s Building in downtown Los Angeles, a bus shelter in her Echo Park neighborhood, and numerous art exhibits and performances with Art Options.

Her award-winning paintings have been nationally exhibited in venues including The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The African American Museum of Art in Los Angeles, The Holter Museum in Helena, MT, the deYoung Museum, San Francisco and the Forest Lawn Museum, Glendale, CA.

Two recent solo exhibits include BAD EE ON THE GOOD FOOT, at the Art Around Gallery in Philadelophia, and WRITING ON THE WALL at the Satusuma Gallery in North Hollywood.

Barbara currently teaches at Columbia College Hollywood, a film school in Tarzan, CA.

I love color, I always have. The cheerful spectrum makes me completely happy. So my exploration as an artist is primarily about how colors interact and what makes them come alive. There are fulcrums between opposites where a magic happens. I have always enjoyed combining real imagery with an indulgence of use color and pattern, playing them off one another, finding that point between them where one “wakes up” the other.

There can be such grandeur and simplicity to be found in both natural and man-made forms. I strive to acknowledge the elegance in an object\'s form, the grace of a flower stem, the convolution of a leaf, and the colors that make them so.

Jill Rosoff studied at the University of California, Berkeley, under members of the Bay Area Figurative Art movement, primarily Joan Brown and Elmer Bischoff. She received her Bachelors degree from Berkeley in Painting and Drawing followed by graduate work studying printmaking in Florence, Italy. She has exhibited her work for over 25 years in solo shows, group shows and in alternative spaces.

Rosoff works primarily in watercolors. She does some printmaking too, both etchings and monotypes. Her images feature her signature warm, jewel-toned palette. She takes inspiration from her Southern California surroundings and her travels throughout the world, especially from Europe, the Americas and the South Pacific.

Her work is found in many corporate collections and numerous private collections in the US and Europe, and is experiencing a growing demand for licensed products reproducing her artwork.

I created ekozania as an outlet to document the human condition through the destruction and the glory. With the creation of every piece, I find myself taking the role of an old storyteller reading the various paths of life to the children in the room. I am drawn towards lifeless objects collecting dust in the corners of the office and then transforming them into the reliable glue to hold together the chaotic thoughts. I enjoy exploring the parallels between these thoughtless material objects and the psyche that lies within every human.

I was born in 1973. In 1996 I graduated from Samara State University of Samara (Russia), faculty of Art and Graphics. In 2007 I graduated from Accademia delle Belle Arti \"Brera\" in Milan (Italy), faculty of painting.

I am growing through art. I like to experiment with color, movement and light and see what this will bring to the universe in this moment in time.

Biography: Born in St. Petersburg into a very artistic family Peter Shpayer studied in " St. Petersburg Art School" and inherited knowledge of some of the best teachers and creative artists. He lives and works in Los Angeles, California, now. His latest art shows have been "Downtown L.A. Art Walk Show", "Eagle Rock Gallery" (L.A.), and Beverly Hills Art Walk. Art statement: My work depicts and implies the flow of versatile emotions of a human soul, with accents on the edge of feelings and experiences every one of may have at a certain time period of life. One word that would describe my painting is "ENERGY". I exert energy in its purest emotional form upon the colors in my paintings.The bright red colors, dominant in my work, emphasize the deepest emotions one may have, whereas more subtle colors represent hope, love, and faith. Each painting has an "energetically" influenced story that I want to tell.

Most of my paintings are oil on canvas technique - play of light and color, inspired by nature and my personal impressions: colorful sparkles, rays and shadows of the sea, sky and air. These are my personal symbols throughout my paintings. I create as well tailor made drawings inspired by people - from personalized postcards to the paintings on the walls of the new apartments if the hosts want to breathe in some specific character into their houses. I truly believe that the aim of my paintings is to bring the message of joy and happy moments of life across to people.

Born in 1981 in a Siberian city of Chita shortly moved to the city of Dmitrov Moscow Region. Being true representatives of Russian intelligence as my parents had passion for art: out of alternatives available I chose art school and was extremely lucky with my teacher, who has been my tutor and friend for all those years. After 5 years at art school I became a University student very far from art as art traditionally does not guarantee your big bright future (general truth and parents\' opinion). However, I continued my art classes in private studio, being already a media planner in one of the top media planning agencies. After 3 years of work in the studio I acquired my own style and became mature enough to start participating in exhibitions of the young artists. So, in 2009 my paintings were in “The spring of hopes” exhibition in Kashirka, Moscow (Feb-March) , Exhibition dedicated to the Year of Youth in Russia in a “Unique talent” gallery (April-May), “Women artists to kids” exhibition in a “Unique talent” gallery, Moscow (May-June). I am concerned now that my art is an integral part of my life now and I know now for sure - I will be moving towards my dream to become the artist for the rest of my life.

Monika Steiner

My work is inspired by Metaphysics and Buddhism. I paint because it allows me to investigate the subtle relationship between perception and material reality. My paintings, influenced by the ever changing nature of life, feature emerging and dissolving spheres floating in empty space as a way of exploring the endless possibilities inherent in appearances.

I contemplate the concept of the interconnectedness of all things until it takes form as an interesting visual abstraction. The work gains richness and complexity as successive layers of paints are added until I feel that a hypnotically meditative and harmonious composition has been achieved.

My ultimate intention is that the space between the painting’s surface and the viewer’s perception of that surface will become a mirror for them to observe the movement of their own thoughts.

Born in Switzerland, Monika Steiner currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area where she received her BFA degree from Sonoma State University. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally in galleries, museums, and public exhibitions. She is represented by Micaela Gallery in San Francisco, Erickson Fine Art in Healdsburg, and Marji Gallery in Santa Fe. Monika paints and sculpts full time.

MISTERIOUSLY ADDICTIVE UNBELIVEABLY INEVITABLE TO QUITE AFTER STARTING.

I am fascinated with society’s castoffs – materials that have been rejected or discarded, and would otherwise go to waste. I work with repurposed acrylic latex paint, also known as house paint, that I rescue from reject shelves before it is sent to landfills. I am amazed at the wide variety of hues and finishes that are available, and I embrace the challenge of working with colors that have not met with approval.

Acrylic latex paint is a fabulously sticky and gooey medium. It flows like thick rivers of molten color and forms intriguing patterns as I manipulate it on canvas. While the paint is wet, I often use tools, washes of water, or my fingers to create marks and designs. The paint dries slowly, and in the process of drying, serendipitous things sometimes occur, such as bubbles that pop to reveal another color below.

I am interested in observing the effects of combining unorthodox materials and manipulating the paint in unusual ways. I push the materials to the max, because I want to see what happens. I am looking for peculiar and curious effects, and it is the process of discovery that intrigues me.

Through my paintings, I am reclaiming that which has been rejected. I take the mistakes and the leftovers, and transform them into objects of beauty.

Cassandra Tondro is an artist best known for her use of experimental materials and innovative techniques. She describes herself as a mad scientist because of her penchant for exploration.

With a concern for the environment, Tondro has a long-standing interest in developing methods of using non-toxic and Earth-friendly materials to create her artwork. To that end, she has been working with plants, Earth pigments and natural processes on paper and canvas. When she uses paint, she finds it on reject shelves, rescuing cans before they are sent to landfills.

Tondro holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from California State University, Northridge and a Master of Arts Degree from Antioch University in Los Angeles, California. She also trained at University of California, Los Angeles and Otis College of Art and Design.

Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, and is in public, corporate and private collections both nationally and internationally.

She is a founder of ARTconnectsLA, a non-profit corporation that serves the Los Angeles area by placing artwork in social service agencies, community centers and non-profit organizations that would not otherwise be able to afford original art. She is also the founder and former owner of WildFiber, Fiber Arts Studio and Store in Santa Monica, California.

My inspiration is nature. My work is an ongoing study of the dynamic relationship between form and emotion.

Ushangi’s work is highly recognizable for its unique artistry and style, which stem from his inner vision and his immersion in the culture of his native Georgia and other ethnic cultures of the former Soviet Union.

His lifelong devotion to his art began at age 9 with his first stone sculpture, which was completed at age 11. His first award in competition came at age 13. Much other Soviet recognition followed, including: Young Georgians Award (1970), Union of Georgian Artists Award (1971), Moscow Art Fund Award (1973), first place in the All USSR Competition of 1981 for his Memorial Monument to Tsiolkovski, the leading Soviet Space Scientist.

In 1981 he was brought to Moscow as a sculptor for the Russian Department of Monuments. During this period, he was also Master/Teacher at the Moscow Studio of Fine Arts.

Ushangi is a 1968 Graduate of the State Art School, Tbilisi, Georgia and a 1972 Graduate of the Georgian National College of the Arts.

Since immigrating to the United States, Ushangi’s work has been exhibited and commissioned in Washington D.C., the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sierra Foothills and Los Angeles, where he currently resides.

Primarily self-taught, I find the flexibility and range of possibilities offered by the digital medium to be an excellent means for expressing my creative feelings and ideas. The creative process leads me frequently into unforeseen areas with some surprising results. The conflicts and complementarities of the inner and outer worlds play a significant role in the content of my work. Ezra Pound once gave the definition of an artistic image as an “intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time.\" Much of my work results in emotional-thought images which are indeed time-captures of these complexes.

THE ZEN OF THE LAND

unites a visual trilogy of country people, their landscapes and lifestyles in humanist, spiritual, pictorial harmony. Willat brings a centered, thoughtful and organic approach to photography and to the living of a purposeful artists' life. The serenity in her images is both pensive and evocative; mirroring her contemplative intellect and ebullient personality. The artist’s best works percolate with a Mandala-full of life forces that emanate from her subjects, which she shoots in situ. Her most interesting pictures linger in the mind's eye. They move the viewer into spaces where we breathe deeper and slower- harmonizing with those who inhabit the visual world that Willat creates.

“I can get lost in the moment. The shutter seems to click on its own when I'm fortunate enough to capture someone at one with their environment. My favorite shots are not portraits and they’re not landscapes. I like to shoot people going about the living of their lives within their lands. They become defined by how and where they live. That’s what I’m known for.”

Jemmaa El Fna, a cityscape of Marrakesh’s town square, is a pageant of humanity where horse drawn carriages, push carts and shoe shine stands are readying the famous marketplace for day’s end. It perfectly expresses the interchangeability of Willat’s desire to characterize those she shoots by the places they inhabit and to portray these places by the persons who populate them.

Felice Willat is an award-winning travel photographer and publisher, whose images from Burma, Morocco, China, Vietnam and Argentina, capture the beauty of the human landscape across cultures. Willat's photographs have been juried into the Los Angeles Center for Photography, Photo LA, Photo Independent, TAG Gallery, Bergamot Station, the Brand Library, Glendale, CA, and numerous other venues across the United States and in London, UK and Italy.In 2010, Felice won First Prize, for her Travel images in the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs’ annual juried exhibition. In 2009 Felice published The Quiet Between, Song of Burma, a book of photography and poems.

Felice sees her camera as providing a sense of time expansion and stillness. She says, “I could capture a moment, something sacred or commonplace, an unconscious gesture, a tattered clothesline, a red plastic pitcher, or a worn prayer book. I like to leave the familiar, travel to far-away places, and find the gift of really being present.”

My lifelong passion in art could be dated back to the sixties, when I was taking private classes by local artists including Ng Po-wan (1965-1970), and afterwards, Chen Hok-shu (1971-1973), who cultivated my interest in traditional Western art and equipped me with a store of painting techniques. After graduating at the University of Hong Kong in 1972, I served as a social worker, and later, administrator in the Hong Kong government for two decades. It was, however, not until 1991, after immigrating to the United States, that I resumed her artistic endeavour.

Califorina Native, presently residing in San Diego. My love of nature is reflectived in my art. Flowers, ocean and shells are some of my favorites. Love experimenting with different styles. Currently into oils, but have a large collection of watercolors in my portfolio as well.
