“Mozart and the Mind of Music”:

Joel Anderson created “Mozart and the Mind of Music”, especially for Mainly Mozart of San Diego’s Mozart and the Mind Symposium. “My passion is for my art to make you smile. I enjoy using bright colors. When I hear music, I see color in the notes and sometimes that will show up in my art. When I paint portraits, sometimes I paint upside down so I do not get distracted by the emotions of the eyes of my subject. This way I can paint the shapes and shadows. In the end I will flip it over to finish the eyes and hope to capture the soul.

Joel has been spoken and painted in Peru, China 2X, Japan, Canada, and across the USA where he has spoken on autism, inclusion and friendship and that God made everyone with a purpose from preschools to Universities like Drexel, Rutgers and USD. It makes me happy when students say my art has inspired them to be an artist

Proceeds from art sales support “Smile Bags” which he created to fill backpacks with arts supplies that Joel gives to children on his journeys and with the foundations he supports.

BIO / CREATIVE STATEMENT

My artwork embraces both the classical tenants of academic fine art painting and contemporary graphic design. While these two categories can be mutually exclusive, I attempt to incorporate both approaches when making visual art. My practical work experience in the commercial printing industry and museum technology is acknowledged when developing an image. I try to create a narrative that must be interpreted by the viewer, similar to both dream analyses and comic books. Metaphysical concepts are coupled with popular imagery in terms of symbols and cultural references.

Many of my paintings are mixed media, acrylic and oil based mediums on stretched canvas, panels, or paper. I also create digital graphics and use them in conjunction with natural media.

In general, the artwork appears in the same layout and dimensions as movie posters, suggesting viewers generate their own dialog regarding content and story. I juxtapose ironic and novel concepts that are recognizable, but create a profound realization — or lame joke. Both humor and terror are essential components of the artwork.

Metascapes explore the transitional space between realism and abstraction where a dream-like inner meditative quality can emerge. Metascapes are certainly, on one level, seascapes, and yet again they are not, for the images are created without reference to any actually viewed scene, and the horizon line can be perceived to be the illusory boundary for what may be above and below the surface of our awareness.

I have painted Metascapes for 30 years. I also make intimate videos that capture in-the-moment movement and ambient sound and I draw and paint expressive portrait and figurative imagery.

I love to paint and experiment with rich colorful oil paint. I also like to put different symbols in my paintings.

For example the jar in my painting "Gospozha Abundance" is a symbol of bliss and abundance, and the girl herself is relaxed and surrounded by flowers, symbols of joy, and trees - which shows that she is grounded within the earth plane and yet soaring to spiritual heights.

As you can see, my paintings are done by vision of my soul. When I am painting, I transfer my emotions on canvas, exclusively in a positive mood and great concentration of the power of positive thought. Everyone want to fulfill their desires, but they don't know how.

My suggestion to you, my friends, get in touch with my wonderful world of art - where everything is possible and where magical dreams and sincere fulfillment of desires is may be accomplished.

When Irma Dorokhova walked in the door for her interview, I immediately felt I already knew her by her joyful, exuberant energy and bright colors. Some people are different from their art; Irma is one of those magical creative forces whose physical existence embodies her art, and that is how she paints.

Irma admitted that my response was pretty accurate. “I am like that inside. It’s probably my desire to live. I like to live, to feel wonderful, as if I were born yesterday. When I paint, I give myself to my art: I put on headphones and listen to beautiful music, and I sleep only fours at night – I want to finish while my inspiration is still alive. I don’t answer phone calls, and I even sleep in a separate bed from my husband; I just don’t want to deal with everyday life.”

For example, during the two weeks it took Irma to create her extraordinary blue The Moose Brings Luck, 60”x36”, she painted day and night. She felt, she said, "like a monk."

Almost from infancy Irina Dorokhova, called by her parents Irma as a sign of affection and her Jewish identity, seemed like an international work of art herself and with her

luminescent beauty resembled a famous Polish actress Barbara Brylska. She was born in Uzbekistan, lived and worked in Kazakstan, Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia and Tatarstan. Irma began painting when she was five; she began work as an artist when she was 16. From childhood, Irma believed in and proceeded on the theory that everything is possible.

She worked at a stone quarry, designed signage, created stencils for industrial applications, baked cakes and worked as a hairdresser – in each case, she was following, perhaps unconsciously, her love of color. When Irma arrived in Los Angeles in 2010, she decided to devote herself totally to painting. It would be her dream come true.

“EliZe” da Jose – Artist Statement

I understand art as a way of emotionally experiencing reality and a universal language of

communication.

Without conscious e?ort and thought, I try to fill my paintings with expressions strong

enough to let the spectator feel the energy put in the depth of the canvas, transforming the

perception of picture into his own art act.

Most recently, I find myself inspired to focus on developing and exploring the connection

between iconography and abstraction in light of Cosmism philosophy. The inspiration of

this uniquely blended style came about as briefly explained in the following.

I believe that abstract painting was and still is an artist’s attempt at capturing and

expressing Plato's world of ideas which is invisible to the earthly eyes. Then, at the

beginning of the 20th century came the avant-gardism of Filonov and Malevich which was a

rebellion against physicality, materialism and petty-bourgeois consumption.

Iconography takes its roots from the symbiosis of antique vivid imagery and spiritual

practices of Ancient Egypt. From ancient times to the present day, man has never stopped

asking himself questions about who he is and what his true role in this world is.

My newfound unique style of blending iconography and abstract painting is somehow an

endeavour to continue humanity’s perennial e?ort and desire to capture and express the

depth of the invisible world via visible materials, to have a glimpse of the heavenly realm via

earthly instruments, akin to Plato and Malevich’s line of thinking.

In my work, I try to find an image of the elusive other shore - where every soul aspires to go -

and trying to find artful means to communicate what is di?icult to express in words.

ELIZAVETA DAJOSE (Artist Name: Elize)

Elize daJose is a professional artist, sculptor, iconographer and illustrator.

Her artworks primarily consist of a unique blend of abstract art and icon painting, experimenting with various materials, although her favorite media remain acrylic painting and ceramics.

Born in Moscow, Russia, her life as an artist started at a very young age. One day on a snowy street in her hometown, she bought Kazimir Malevich’s book from a peddler which turned her consciousness upside down and defined her entire life path.

From 1996 to 2000, she religiously undertook painting, sculpture, and graphics in various workshops of Moscow artists.

Since 2001, she has been working in the creative workshops of the Babushkinsky Sculpture Combine and in 2002, she became a member of the Moscow Union of Artists, sculpture section.

From 2002 to 2010, she actively participated in group exhibitions at the Central House of Artists, Gallery on Kuznetsky Most, Darwin Museum, and Timiryazev Museum.

In 2010, she participated in the Annual Art Juried Competition in Los Angeles, CA, and became a laureate.

In 2011, she took part in the collective exhibition "Woman Day Art Exhibits" at the Pacific Design Center, Los Angeles, CA, and in 2012 she had a solo exhibition "Three Artists" at Liz Loft Gallery, LA, CA.

In 2016, Elize moved to California and actively participated in collective exhibitions, including the "Summer Exhibit" at Bergamot Station Art Center in Santa Monica (2016), "Brain Art Event" at Lark Gallery/The Chiari Project in West Hollywood (2017), and "The Art of Transformation" at Brick & Mortar Loiter Galleries in Long Beach (2023), among many others.

In 2025, Elize was awarded the Silver Medal at the New York International Art Juried Competition, "The Light from the Other Shore."

In 2026, an essay featuring Elize's creativity and spiritual development was published in the book "Revelations of the Artist - Deep Calls to Deep", curated by ArtServe International.

Elize is an active member of the Los Angeles Art Association and Riverside Community Arts Association. She is currently represented by Lark Gallery in West Hollywood and Literary Engineers, LLC in Benicia, CA.

In 1997 I began the body of work called “Visual Coding of the Archetypes on the Basis of the Bible and the Biblical Mythology”.

I use symbolic primitivism to present biblical images in a unique and unprecedented manner, similar to the ancient Chinese tradition of telling stories in the form of pictures rather than words.

My exposure to Carl Jung's theory of archetypes, brought forth a series of drawings that reconsidered the raw imagery of icon painting in the context of unconscious reflexive narrative, the kind Jung proposed, that lies at the very back of our brains and motivates us invisibly. I am drawn to cultural archetypes, symbols and motifs that recur in all forms of mythic and fabulistic discourse and in some way bind all of the arts - literature, theater, fine art, dance and music. I have sought to make overt the presence of these archetypes in my own art, not propagandizing for or illustrating Jung’s theories but simply manifesting them in the process of telling tales and setting scenes.

Eugene Vishnevsky (GenVish) was born in 1960 in the city of Kiev, Ukraine. In 1990 he immigrated to Israel, and then to Canada. Eugene has lived in Los Angeles, California since 1993. According to the artist, his style, black and white symbolic primitivism, appeared in 1985. While growing as an artist, GenVish was greatly impressed and influenced by art of Heieronymous Bosch, Pavel Phylonov, Marc Chagall.

** Galina Kovshilovsky’s paintings derive from her Russian origins. One feels the breath and wildness of a massive country and yet the simple handy work of it dedicated population. Galina’s paintings capture the sprawling epic about the erosion of tradition with visually striking exploration of color in its infinite variety and vitality. Her painting, be they large or small, capture the imagination with visually stunning Swirls and movement of the eye, emotion and the imagination. We are left breathless with the fascinating lovingly layered colors where the rules of organized thought clash and intersect with rituals and beliefs. We are moved. We are coaxed. These pieces are relatable for those in various stages of undress in their battle of the fight of illness or the illusion of one. What it is or pretends to be, how it decides to kill or consume it finds no home were it is not welcomed without the dark and dank but we give it shelter in society and dress it up well and call it progress and fill it up with more meds and more psychology and new names and diagnosis and more and more and more..

Marlena Nicole Guzman-

As a former (Ret.) Los Angeles Police Officer (17 years), working and living in Los Angeles has provided a unique perspective and influence to my artwork. The most influential would be my continued success as a functioning adult living with Bipolar Disorder.

Most of my art reflects my depiction of challenges and reflection as anyone dealing with life hurdles.

My catalog of work is primarily Non-objective and usually use a palate of only three colors; back, white and grey.

I have had the privilege to be featured at the California State University of Northridge gallery showing of "Beautiful Parts" which depicted the perception of beauty through various points of view. I've also shown with Lark during the "Brain Art" Exhibit.

I presented three pieces at the Channel Islands annual art Auction in early 2018 and was a headline feature presenter and article subject for NAMI's (the National Alliance for Mental Illness), July issue of Minorities in Art.

"My art allows me to see the beauty – the color and design – in ordinary everyday objects, in buildings, in clothing, in nature.

Georganne Aldrich Heller, daughter of the famous fashion designer and art collector Larry Aldrich and a successful designer is an artist in her own right. She makes collages building on the vision that drove her long career as a theatrical producer in New York. Each collage and boxed construction represents a setting of evolving mysteries, opening the way to surreal dramas inviting viewers to enter the world of her dreams, yet unruled by any sort of literary content. Instead, Heller favors a lucid, iconic approach where the “thingness” of shapes and substances is allowed its own expression, her visual reasoning riding on the dynamic that powered western art through a half century of experiment, from cubism to De Stijl.

My photographs are not generally planned in advance, and I do not anticipate that the onlooker will share my viewpoint. However, I feel that if my photograph leaves an image on the viewer’s mind, something has been accomplished.

Born in Paris, raised in Tehran and Boston, with a little over 2 years of dormancy in Lisbon, Armineh is an

iPhoneographer now based in Los Angeles, capturing moments since 2009. She is one of the early members of

the iphoneography movement. She has had no professional training however her vision has been the driving force behind her creations. She also shoots with her DSLR camera. For the time being, photography is a hobby.

Narine Isajanyan was born in Armenian and began drawing and painting at the age of five. During her childhood she visited many museums and galleries in Armenian and St. Petersburg, as well as receiving training in music and dance. In college she continued her training in art and received a Bachelors degree in 1987 from the College of Architecture in Yerevan. She moved to Moscow to study at the Moscow Architectural Institute but found Soviet regulations with architecture too restrictive and sought more freedom to express her ideas through her art. She returned to Armenian and studied art with Manvel Bagdasaryan and Samvel Bagdasaryan and later received a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the Yerevan University of Art and Theater. She first started exhibiting her art in 1990 in Armenia and has participated in numerous shows in Moscow, Beruit, Abu Dhabi, Croatia and Belgium. She came to the United States in 1998 when she was invited to participate in an art exhibition and since then has exhibited her paintings at many galleries in the Los Angeles area.

Inspired by the impressionist painter Monet, Narine's work is expressionist, minimalist and conceptual by turns. Whether on canvas, paper, board, wood or actually made of metal, her pieces become abstract landscapes that are as fluid within as they are consistent and organic as a whole.

About her art, Narine says, "When I paint, I feel like I am flying and dancing; I hear music in my mind. Through my art I want to express the freedom I feel in my soul."

A long time graphic artist and painter I've always loved the combination of the written word and images to invoke thought, feeling and inspirational action.

As an on again, off again on again practicing painter and fitness professional I now find myself completely immersed in the painting world. I find joy and energy through color and true excitement about bestowing viewers with flowing compositions to unveil glimpses of their own unique self discovery.

As a lifelong practicing artist since the age of 10 the inclusion of type and it's flowing edges helps bridge my desire to grab the viewers attention to invoke feelings of wonder with words and encouragement of what it means to truly be alive.

If it was sculpting human flesh when working with individuals in my fitness business or expressing ideas with line and color creating on canvas the experience is the same.

The imaginative potential of the body, mind and soul is honored and revered. With the constant self question of...

"What is the experience of truly being alive?"

That to me is the only true ART to investigate and I try as best as I can to raise a bit of that question to my community and fellow man in each of my works.

*Greg Alan Jankowski a native son of Dayton, Ohio and has been a practicing artist for over 44 years. His passion for the creative arts have also included music, poetry, photography, sculpture along with his first love drawing and painting. Over his storied creative lifelong career Greg has designed and produced works for the USAF, advertising firms with a second concurrent career as a Professional Athletic Trainer and Life Coach Speaker for the Arts and Fitness in Chicago, NYC, San Diego and Los Angeles.

He currently resides in Manhattan Beach, CA with his wife Ingrid Reyes-Jankowski and their two Canines Sophie and Bella.

Anthony works primarily with Illustration, Analog Collage and Digital Collage techniques but enjoys to expand his skillset and explore the limitations and Possibilities of new mediums. His work centres around Surrealism, Satire, Wonderment, Human Connection and the Darker Draws of Human Nature.

Anthony D Kelly is a Freelance Illustrator, Writer and Visual Arts Practitioner. He currently bases his practice in Castlebar, County Mayo located on Irelands West Coast. He has extensive experience as a Gallery Administrator, Curator and Project Facilitator from his time at Basement Project Space an artist led initiative which was based in Cork City, Ireland. The aim of this initiative was to generate an exhibition/project space independent of established institutions, to provide development opportunities for emerging artists and to encourage cutting edge experimental practice across a broad range of disciplines.

He has studied both Arts Administration and Arts Participation and Global Development and he is currently training in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy. Anthony is greatly interested in the Arts as an effective method for engagement with Social, Political and Global Development issues. He works mainly with Illustration, Collage and Assemblage techniques to create humorous, unnerving and deeply satirical imagery.

Leader of the International Bunker Art group, Kiki is constantly mastering his abstract expressionist techniques.

His art works are on display in the state museums in Germany, Armenia, Estonia, Kazakhstan and constitute an important part of the Nancy and Norton Dodge collection of the Zimmerly Art Museum in New Jersey.

My art, whether abstract, figurative, or combinations of both, explores dimensional vibrations through the use of line, color, symbolism, and form. Geometry, particle physics, holonomic brain theory, mythology, and Jung's theories of synchronicity and the collective unconscious all inform my work.

Perceiving the concepts contained in the above theories, I strive to reveal the deeper dimensions and innate spirituality that exist in the here and now of every moment.

I am a mixed-media artist whose works include traditional media (watercolor, pastel, pen and ink, oil, acrylic), digital or new media, and combinations of both. Upcoming plans are to work with LED panels (backlit) and animation.

Influences include the latest fantastical discoveries of particle physics, synchronicity, superstring, holonomic brain and biotic theory, and Taoism. Authors as diverse as Gary Zukov, Brian Greene, Daniel Goleman, Carlos Castenada, Aldous Huxley, Joseph Campbell, William Blake, and Carl Jung have influenced my perception and vision.

My art name is Lark - the bird that lingers between the earth and the sky. We artists do it at the moment of inspiration and meditation. That's how I create my art. I meditate and start with the spontaneous movements of my instruments; usually it is not a brush. A brush makes me think. My instruments are usually just pieces of cardboard. I also paint on any surface – canvas, board, plexiglass, glass, wood, etc – and I love to experiment and see what happens. My best creations take place in a state of no mind.

Although I begin the way abstract expressionists do and use some sumi-e techniques, eventually most of my creation starts shaping as abstract or impressionistic landscapes as ocean, sky, trees, flowers and mountain views start appearing from the formless. Nature is my source of inspiration, but instead of landscape details I channel nature's moods, the feeling of being one with nature, and swimming in its atmospheric light.

Light is what drives me to continue working. My mission is always to bring more light to people around me with my art, poetry and meditations. I know that viewers feel joy, peace and harmony when they look at my work, enter and settle inside it because it heals their emotional wounds and it makes me happy. Being an artist is an opportunity to express the fountain of my creative energy and at the same time serve people's needs in beauty that will heal the world.

When people perceive the light, the high and playful energy that my paintings emanate, they start feeling they are back in the fairy-tale world of their childhood, when their soul was open to transformations and miracles, and they feel like Alice in her enchanting wonderland.

From the beginning of her art career, Lark’s art caught the attention of art lovers and gained recognition from art jurors including LA Weekly critic Peter Frank, Santa Monica Museum Art Director Lisa Melandri and MOCA curator Alma Ruiz.

Fusing classical and contemporary art traditions, Lark's award-winning artworks carry her signature gestural brushstrokes and vibrant color palettes. They have been featured in the many prestigious exhibitions, art catalogs and sold globally in France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Russia, Armenia, Canada, Sweden and many other countries. In 2021 - 2025 Lark's art was exhibited in the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and the Shiba City Museum of Art In Japan where Lark got two Gold Awards in the group shows.

When younger, I agonized whether to become an artist or a psychologist. After attending Rhode Island School of Design for a summer during, I concluded I wasn’t talented enough to be an artist. Besides that, I wasn’t confident I could earn a living as an artist or deal with the loneliness of social isolation.

So, I became a clinical psychologist with a specialty in creativity. Over the years, as I began writing papers and books, I re-entered art through the back door. I wrote about concepts that needed to be visualized. Yet no images existed. This “forced” me to illustrate my own books. As long as I conceptualized what I was doing as communicating rather than making art, I felt safe and legitimized.

Very slowly, through the years and decades, I have crawled my way back to fine art. I invite a model monthly to my house in Topanga for live drawing sessions. I have created the first coloring book for mindfulness that includes content and meaningful images, called Truly Mindful Coloring (PESI, 2016). As a psychologist and part of the Executive Board of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association, I co-founded and curate an annual exhibition of psychotherapist art called “Mirrors of the Mind: The Psychotherapist as Artist.” We are in our sixth year. The exhibition downtown at Art Share LA includes national and international submissions of visual and performing artists.

I have finally reclaimed my identity as an artist and am proud to be part of the Brain show!

Jora Nelstein

Jora is a self taught artist born in Amsterdam and currently living in Los Angeles.

As a child she spend four years in the lush green tropics of Suriname, South America, and as a young adult she pursuit a modern dance career in New York City. These two major events in her life are recognized her paintings today. Her abstract work tends to be layered with bold color and big fluid movement. Often the layering represents the layers of the human emotions, and the mere colors underneath fleeing memories like some unconscious whispers hidden in the shadows.

By looking at her work, Jora hopes that the viewer will be stirred and have their own interpretation of the work viewed.

My paintings come out as attempts to "translate" from ideograms and fantastic hieroglyphs that I see in the patterns of nature, most often in the tree bark.

It is like listening to a song in an unknown language. Everyone will have their own guess of what the words might say, but the main theme of the song will be recognized.I am so thrilled by the moments of gazing into the patterns of nature when intuition gives a glimpse from the world of archetypes. I think that trees are books and libraries that can be read, perhaps as well as any thing around if we attune to it…

My paintings are sort of "snapshots" from the process of reading the Book of Nature by the mind;these "snapshots" are somewhere in between the imagery and the language.The mind projects meanings onto the shapes and lines, but they are being reflected back, startling and puzzling… there is always a sensation of a mirror dialog, of having been "read" yourself by the Book of Nature...

THE ZEN OF THE LAND

unites a visual trilogy of country people, their landscapes and lifestyles in humanist, spiritual, pictorial harmony. Willat brings a centered, thoughtful and organic approach to photography and to the living of a purposeful artists' life. The serenity in her images is both pensive and evocative; mirroring her contemplative intellect and ebullient personality. The artist’s best works percolate with a Mandala-full of life forces that emanate from her subjects, which she shoots in situ. Her most interesting pictures linger in the mind's eye. They move the viewer into spaces where we breathe deeper and slower- harmonizing with those who inhabit the visual world that Willat creates.

“I can get lost in the moment. The shutter seems to click on its own when I'm fortunate enough to capture someone at one with their environment. My favorite shots are not portraits and they’re not landscapes. I like to shoot people going about the living of their lives within their lands. They become defined by how and where they live. That’s what I’m known for.”

Jemmaa El Fna, a cityscape of Marrakesh’s town square, is a pageant of humanity where horse drawn carriages, push carts and shoe shine stands are readying the famous marketplace for day’s end. It perfectly expresses the interchangeability of Willat’s desire to characterize those she shoots by the places they inhabit and to portray these places by the persons who populate them.

Felice Willat is an award-winning travel photographer and publisher, whose images from Burma, Morocco, China, Vietnam and Argentina, capture the beauty of the human landscape across cultures. Willat's photographs have been juried into the Los Angeles Center for Photography, Photo LA, Photo Independent, TAG Gallery, Bergamot Station, the Brand Library, Glendale, CA, and numerous other venues across the United States and in London, UK and Italy.In 2010, Felice won First Prize, for her Travel images in the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs’ annual juried exhibition. In 2009 Felice published The Quiet Between, Song of Burma, a book of photography and poems.

Felice sees her camera as providing a sense of time expansion and stillness. She says, “I could capture a moment, something sacred or commonplace, an unconscious gesture, a tattered clothesline, a red plastic pitcher, or a worn prayer book. I like to leave the familiar, travel to far-away places, and find the gift of really being present.”
